Choosing a product

When choosing a product you wish to mail order you need to make sure that it is something that you will be proud to sell and passionate about. It should be an item or a niche that will hold your interest throughout the coming months and years.

A good mail order product is one which is not usually found in the shops. Ideally it should be easy to describe and illustrate in advertising and be easy to have repeat sales. Have items which fit in well with a range of products so that you will be able to expand.

When you make one sale it is always useful to be able to offer further products that the same customers will be likely to be interested in.

Look around and see what others are selling by mail order. Try to spot a gap in the market.

Here is a list of the kind of products offered by mail order sellers:

• Clothing: women’s, men’s, children’s, babies.

• Books and educational materials

• Sports equipment

• Health and wellness products

• Stationery and printing supplies

• Electrical goods.

You will also need to consider whether you are going to stock inventory or have it sent for you.

The former can be rather expensive in start up costs. You will also have to take a chance on whether you are choosing a product which will sell otherwise it will stay in store pinning down your cash.

The latter is very low on outlay but you will have to find a company that you will be happy with.
