Goal setting for over 50s
Let’s keep it simple. Goal setting is all about what you want so that you can aim in the right direction. First thing to get straight is that because you have reached the age of 50 plus, 60 plus or 70 plus doesn’t mean that you have to be aimless. Whatever our age we can still make plans for the future. You probably make plans for holidays, for Christmas, for the family coming to stay. Now I want you to think about the other parts of your life.
Goal setting is important for everyone. As we mature we realise that it also helps us to work smart.Presumably you are visiting this site to gain business ideas. After all that’s what the address is about. However, I believe that your business is inextricably bound up with the rest of your life. Because you are researching for something which you are going to enjoy doing, now is the time to fit it into the other parts of your life. Set up a whole rounded lifestyle which includes your business. Think about various aspects of your life. For instance: family, health, community, fitness, hobbies, business, financial, home, spiritual, friendship, personal. What do you want in each of these areas? You may not use all the headings given here. You may find other headings matter much more to you. However you divide your time, make sure that the proportion given to each of your headings is in keeping with what you want. What do I mean by short, medium and long term? Again it’s entirely up to you plus the logistics of the goal in question. In your goal setting you may decide: • Short term = one year • Medium term = three years • Long term = five years or then again they could be one, five and ten years. Be absolutely sure what you want out of life and write it all down with actual dates. Not “in five years” but “2nd July 2011”. If you don’t write down your goals AND put a date to them then they are just dreams. Are you going to be devoting your life to your business? Or are you developing a business to provide the kind of lifestyle you want? It’s your call. Whatever your decision you need to write down your goals. Then decide on the time frame for each: short, medium or long term. The short term will almost always be a stepping stone to the medium and long term goals.
