Why do you want your own business?

Are you choosing to run your own business? Has it been forced upon you by circumstances? Why do you want your own business over 50? Investigate your reasons fully before launching off.

The first thing to do is go and sit somewhere quiet. Have a cup of coffee and relax. Take a pen and paper. Now write down everything that you want in life. Just make a list. Big things. Little things. Keep writing. Don’t think about work or business. Think about life.

Now this list can be added to over days and weeks. From this list you will be able to set goals. Being self employed and running your own business will be one part of your goal setting and probably the means by which you intend to reach other goals. Once you have made a list you will have a clearer picture of what you want in life. The next step is to decide how you are going to get an income. There are several main ways that you can tackle this:

1. Get a job – any job to generate an income.

2. Be self employed – in essence taking short term jobs or contracts for various individuals/companies. See: Self employment.

3. Start up a business of your own. See: Start up. Why do you want to work? Is it purely for the money to enable you to have the lifestyle you want? Are you fulfilled by being able to work? Is what you do part of your lifestyle? Be careful here – it may be that you are defined by your occupation/profession. One of the problems for many when leaving their work is that they feel they have become a ‘nobody’.

Be honest with yourself about your reasons to start your own business. You need to be absolutely sure otherwise you are likely to fail. Having your own business will mean facing many challenges . Will you be determined enough to force your way through these?

I have found that being my own 'boss' is great, but it is not all plain sailing. Much hard work goes into my business. Because I am truly involved in my business it doesn't feel like 'work'. Don't get me wrong. Some tasks are just plain slog. On the whole though I enjoy what I do and revel in being in control of my life.
