Training for your new position
Training is essential if you are going to organize and run your own business. When thinking about starting your own business you need to approach it from two directions: 1 What business ideas appear viable 2 What skills and experience you have No matter what business you choose to go into, if you are working for yourself and by yourself, then you must have at least a fundamental understanding of each task. It may be advisable to gain some knowledge and qualifications before you open for business. What type of training do you need? Well it divides into three areas:
Skills of the business
These, of course, depend on the business you want to undertake. It may be that you already have the necessary skills. Have you received ALL the training you need? Are you just transferring from working for a boss to working for yourself? Or, perhaps you have a hobby that you’ve always wanted to pursue to make an income. If it has been your main full time employment, have you completed the whole task? Do you need to get some knowledge in order to complete each project? Don’t, whatever you do, “spoil the ship for a ha’p’orth of tar”! If it has been a hobby, will it lend itself to becoming a full blown business? Will you enjoy it as much when you have to do it to gain a regular income? Time is of the essence when running a business. Will you be speedy enough with your hobby? Training is the answer.
Administration skills to run the business
If you are basing your business on practical, selling or consulting skills for example, it may be that you have never even thought about administration. In this area it is relatively easy to obtain training. A basic level of computer literacy will enable you to write letters and keep records. The monetary situation has to be organized so rudimentary bookkeeping will have to be undertaken. Administration will keep your business on track so no matter what your abilities in this area the training will be well worthwhile.
Personal Development
This is almost the top training requirement for anyone who wishes to achieve aims in life. Personal Development is an ongoing requirement. It is an area that was not covered in school. You could say that much is common sense – and so it is. However, we often need to be able to read or be told about such things in order to start us thinking. Once we start thinking about ourselves we find that there is a whole new world opened for us. Personal Development can be obtained in classes, seminars, books and audio/visual products.
All three types of training are absolutely essential if you are to make a success of your new business. You are never too old to learn. In fact, the older you are the more deals there are in education. Some are so inexpensive, they are free. So look around. See what there is in your town.
